Family Therapy FAQs
Marriage and Family therapy is therapy to address concerns within the family system or romantic relationship. Therapy is centered around the family system and conducted from a relational lens, as opposed to just focusing on one individual.
Relationships are complex systems and conflict is inevitable. This conflict can feel deeply overwhelming and if not addressed can result in anger, resentment, and detachment. Family therapy is an important tool to help couples and families resolve conflicts and work on their communication. With the help of a trained therapist in a supportive environment, couples counseling and family therapy can help families identify negative communication patterns and receive guidance on how to change this pattern to improve their quality of relationships with each other.
LMFT- (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist) They have a Master’s degree and have fulfilled the clinical hours, supervision, and education requirements to have their license.
MFT- (Marriage and Family Therapist) They have a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy but have not fulfilled the requirements to become licensed.
You should bring the members of the family that you feel play an important role in the area of concern or could be helpful in supporting progress.
Some areas of concern include but are not limited to marital/relationship conflict, parenting concerns, behavior problems in a child/adolescent, life transitions, death of a loved one, etc.
Being married is not a requirement! Neither does living together!
Sometimes people are reluctant to participating in therapy. It is important to take an empathetic approach and allowing them to express their concerns with participating. It is possible to start therapy and introduce family members as the process moves forward.
This modality may not be appropriate if there is active violence or abuse or if concerns presented are better suited for individual approach.
Yes! Some people find it helpful to have a separate therapist outside of family therapy to work on additional individual goals.
