Autism Evaluations at TLC Wellness
Ages Served
2-18 years of age
What should I expect?
The assessment process will start with the parent or guardian filling out specific forms (such as the BASC-3 Structured Developmental History) to obtain an initial understanding of concerns and history. This will be followed by a detailed intake. During the intake, we will ask questions about your child’s current and past functioning. This will cover areas like their emotions, strengths, behaviors, developmental history, social and play skills, academics, medical history, and family background.
Next, your child will have an in-person assessment using a tool called the CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale.) This allows the psychologist to interact with and observe your child. Even though it is a formal assessment, it will feel relaxed and informal for your child. All the information, data, and observations will be reviewed to see if your child may have Autism Spectrum Disorder. The process will end with a feedback session and recommendations. The entire assessment takes about three weeks.
If I have concerns, what are the benefits of pursuing an evaluation?
- You will receive a detailed report that will help you and those that interact with your child gain a better understanding of their needs, strengths, goals, and treatment recommendations.
- You will obtain needed documentation to obtain varying levels of care pending the outcome of the evaluation.
- At TLC Wellness, we are committed to ensuring your whole child’s needs are met across settings. This will include guidance on possible school interventions for a 504 or Individualized Education Plan (IEP.) There can also be discussion of the benefits of medication, referral for a social skills group, as well as other resources that may benefit your family. This may include PT, OT, or speech therapies.
- If your child is exhibiting symptoms of co-occurring or other primary concerns, such as anxiety, ADHD, or depression, this will be identified through the process and recommendations made in accordance.
